God Speaks of Nature and Its Beings

39 “Do you know the time the ^[a]^(A)mountain goats give birth?
Do you observe the calving of the ^(B)deer?
²Can you count the months they fulfill,
Or do you know the time they give birth?
³They kneel down, they deliver their young,
They get rid of their labor pains.
⁴Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field;
They leave and do not return to them.

⁵“Who sent the ^(C)wild donkey out free?
And who opened the bonds of the swift donkey,
⁶To whom I gave ^(D)the wilderness as his home,
And the salt land as his dwelling place?
⁷He laughs at the turmoil of the city,
He does not hear the shouting of the taskmaster.
⁸He explores the mountains of his pasture,
And searches after every green thing.
⁹Will the ^(E)wild bull be willing to serve you,
Or will he spend the night at your feeding trough?
¹⁰Can you tie down the wild bull in a furrow with ^[b]ropes,
Or will he ^[c]plow the valleys after you?
¹¹Will you trust him because his strength is great,
And leave your labor to him?
¹²Will you have faith in him that he will return your ^[d]grain
And gather it from your threshing floor?

¹³“The wings of the ostrich flap joyously,
With the pinion and feathers of ^[e]love,
¹⁴For she abandons her eggs to the earth
And warms them in the dust,
¹⁵And she forgets that a foot may crush ^[f]them,
Or that a wild animal may trample ^[g]them.
¹⁶She treats her young ^(F)cruelly, as if they were not hers;
Though her labor is for nothing, she is ^[h]unconcerned,
¹⁷Because God has made her forget wisdom,
And has not given her a share of understanding.
¹⁸When she rushes away on high,
She laughs at the horse and his rider.

¹⁹“Do you give the horse his might?
Do you clothe his neck with a mane?
²⁰Do you make him ^(G)leap like locusts?
His majestic ^(H)snorting is frightening.
²¹^[i]He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength;
He ^(I)goes out to meet the battle.
²²He laughs at fear and is not dismayed;
And he does not turn back from the sword.
²³The quiver rattles against him,
The flashing spear and javelin.
²⁴He ^[j]races over the ground with a roar and fury,
And he does not stand still when he hears the sound of the trumpet.
²⁵As often as the trumpet sounds he says, ‘Aha!’
And he senses the battle from afar,
And the thunder of the captains and the war cry.

²⁶“Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars,
Stretching his wings toward the south?
²⁷Is it at your ^[k]command that the eagle flies high,
And makes ^(J)his nest on high?
²⁸He dwells and spends his nights on the cliff,
On the rocky cliff, an inaccessible place.
²⁹From there he ^(K)tracks food;
His eyes look at it from afar.
³⁰His young ones also lick up blood greedily;
And ^(L)where the slain are, there he is.”

The Incarnate Word

1 What was ^(A)from the beginning, what we have ^(B)heard, what we have ^(C)seen with our eyes, what we ^(D)have looked at and ^(E)touched with our hands, concerning the ^(F)Word of Life— ²and ^(G)the life was revealed, and we have ^(H)seen and ^(I)testify and proclaim to you ^(J)the eternal life, which was ^(K)with the Father and was ^(L)revealed to us— ³what we have ^(M)seen and ^(N)heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our ^(O)fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. ⁴^(P)These things we write, so that our ^(Q)joy may be made complete.

God Is Light

⁵^(R)This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that ^(S)God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. ⁶^(T)If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we ^(U)lie and ^(V)do not practice the truth; ⁷but if we ^(W)walk in the Light as ^(X)He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and ^(Y)the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. ⁸^(Z)If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the ^(AA)truth is not in us. ⁹^(AB)If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and ^(AC)cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰^(AD)If we say that we have not sinned, we ^(AE)make Him a liar and ^(AF)His word is not in us.

Christ Is Our Advocate

2 ^(AG)My little children, I am ^(AH)writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, ^(AI)we have an ^[a]^(AJ)Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; ²and He Himself is ^(AK)the ^[b]propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also ^(AL)for the sins of the whole world.

³^(AM)By this we know that we have come to ^(AN)know Him, if we ^(AO)keep His commandments. ⁴The one who says, “^(AP)I have come to ^(AQ)know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a ^(AR)liar, and ^(AS)the truth is not in him; ⁵but whoever ^(AT)follows His word, in him the ^(AU)love of God has truly been perfected. ^(AV)By this we know that we are in Him: ⁶the one who says that he ^(AW)remains in Him ^(AX)ought, himself also, walk just as He walked.

Job Says What Can I Say?

40 Then the Lord said to Job,

²“Will the faultfinder ^(A)contend with the Almighty?
Let him who ^(B)rebukes God ^[a]give an answer.”

³Then Job answered the Lord and said,

⁴“Behold, I am insignificant; what can I say in response to You?
I ^(C)put my hand on my mouth.
⁵I have spoken once, and ^(D)I will not reply;
Or twice, and I will add nothing more.”

God Questions Job

⁶Then the ^(E)Lord answered Job from the whirlwind and said,

⁷“Now ^[b]^(F)tighten the belt on your waist like a man;
I will ^(G)ask you, and you instruct Me.
⁸Will you really ^(H)nullify My judgment?
Will you ^(I)condemn Me ^(J)so that you may be justified?
⁹Or do you have an arm like God,
And can you ^(K)thunder with a voice like His?

¹⁰“^(L)Adorn yourself with pride and dignity,
And clothe yourself with honor and majesty.
¹¹Let out your ^(M)outbursts of anger,
And look at everyone who is ^(N)arrogant, and humble him.
¹²Look at everyone who is arrogant, and ^(O)humble him,
And ^(P)trample down the wicked ^[c]where they stand.
¹³^(Q)Hide them together in the dust;
Imprison ^[d]them in the hidden place.
¹⁴Then I will also ^[e]confess to you,
That your own right hand can save you.

God’s Power Shown in Creatures

¹⁵“Behold, ^[f]Behemoth, which ^(R)I made ^[g]as well as you;
He eats grass like an ox.
¹⁶Behold, his strength in his waist,
And his power in the muscles of his belly.
¹⁷He hangs his tail like a cedar;
The tendons of his thighs are knit together.
¹⁸His bones are tubes of bronze;
His ^[h]limbs are like bars of iron.

¹⁹“He is the ^(S)first of the ways of God;
Let his ^(T)Maker bring His sword near.
²⁰Indeed the ^[i]mountains ^(U)bring him food,
And all the animals of the field ^(V)play there.
²¹He lies down under the lotus plants,
In the hiding place of the reeds and the marsh.
²²The lotus plants cover him with ^[j]shade;
The willows of the brook surround him.
²³If a river ^[k]rages, he is not alarmed;
He is confident, though the ^(W)Jordan rushes to his mouth.
²⁴Can anyone capture him ^[l]when he is on watch,
Can anyone pierce his nose with barbs?

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

³²^(A)Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they ^(B)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, ³³saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and ^(C)the Son of Man will be ^[a]handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will ^[b]hand Him over to the Gentiles. ³⁴And they will mock Him and ^(D)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

³⁵^[c]^(E)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to ^[d]Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” ³⁶And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” ³⁷They said to Him, “^[e]Grant that we ^(F)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” ³⁸But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able ^(G)to drink the cup that I drink, or ^(H)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” ³⁹They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink ^(I)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. ⁴⁰But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; ^(J)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

⁴¹^(K)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with ^[f]James and John. ⁴²Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their ^[g]people in high position exercise authority over them. ⁴³But it is not this way among you; ^(L)rather, whoever wants to become ^[h]prominent among you shall be your servant; ⁴⁴and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. ⁴⁵For even the Son of Man ^(M)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His ^[i]life as a ransom for many.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

⁴⁶^(N)Then they *came to Jericho. And later, ^(O)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. ⁴⁷And when he heard that it was Jesus the ^(P)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, ^(Q)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁸Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “^(R)Son of David, have mercy on me!” ⁴⁹And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “^(S)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.” ⁵⁰And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. ⁵¹And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “^[j]^(T)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” ⁵²And Jesus said to him, “Go; ^(U)your faith has ^[k]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
